What is spoolsv.exe

spoolsv.exe is the executable file which handles the printing jobs. With more spoolsv.exe running behind and when we give print command and it starts working. We can find it in the Task Manager panel. Though it is not that essential executable file but while a printing operation is going on then its proper running is quite important.

Now more specifically we can see that when we give command to print some documents we don’t have to wait for each print to be done. Meanwhile we can continue our other tasks and the printer prints the documents.

This is called printer spooler operation, when multiple files are being print they are temporarily stored in the buffer memory of the printer and the spoolsv.exe file executes the sequential operation i.e. files are being stored in a queue and being printed accordingly.

So as we can see now that spoolsv.exe is an important executable file for printing operation.

Problems with spoolsv.exe

As spoolsv.exe is associated with printing job so malfunction of this file will lead us to malfunctioning printing jobs. Additionally when this file is running, sometimes we can see that CPU usage has gone up to almost 100%. So it is also a reason for worry.

Cause

There are several reasons for spoolsv.exe to work in an unusual manner.

  1. The main reason is virus infection, malware attack.
  2. The other reason is the huge pile of spooled data remained in the C:WindowsSystem32SpoolPrinters folder. These are .SHD and SPL files.

  1. First of all we have to delete the spooled data remained on the C:WindowsSystem32SpoolPrinters folder. Before doing so we have to stop the spoolsv.exe service in the Task Manager panel.
  • Press Alt+Ctrl+Del button and go to Task Manager. Then we have to right click on the spoolsv.exe service and when the window comes with option “End process”, we have to left click that
  • Afterwards we have to go the C:WindowsSystem32SpoolPrinters folder and delete all the spooled data.
