rthdcpl.exe – Problem and Solution

What is rthdcpl.exe

rthdcpl.exe is an executable file for the Realtek HD Audio system installed in Windows Operating System. In the Windows OS like Windows XP or Windows 7 the sound driver is generally made of Realtek audio ICs. So it is clear that rthdcpl.exe helps the sound driver working in the Windows OS. Generally it is bundled along with Realtek HD audio driver manager i.e. when we install the driver for the audio through our given Motherboard CD or sometimes it is already installed in the system, the rthdcpl.exe file comes with it. It manages the working of the audio driver. We can see the file process working in the Task Manager panel.


The proper working of the rthdcpl.exe file is important. Through this file we can configure and change the settings of the Realtek HD audio sound manager which is working on the task bar.

Whenever we encounter problem regarding rthdcpl.exe we can see the message: “rthdcpl.exe – Illegal System DLL Relocation”.


If this problem occurs then there is a possibility that our audio system may not work properly with our system.


As rthdcpl.exe is not a necessary executable file so it may not harm the computer operation but it is obvious that it will somehow affect the performance. There are some solutions which can fix the problem.

  1. For Windows XP go to ‘start’ tab then go to ‘run’. There type ‘msconfig’, a window will open. There we have to go to the start up tab and finding rthdcpl.exe we have to disable it restart it. And for Windows 7 we need to go to ‘start’ button, then in the type box, type ‘msconfig’, rest is the same process.

    . Still it is recommended to go to the motherboard manufacturer site and download the required driver.
